The Quran reshapes attitudes before actions
Islam changes attitudes durably by reshaping the Qur'anic paradigm, especially belief in the Akhirah, so people reinterpret behavior, relationships, resources, and communal struggles through eternal accountability.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces paradigm shift as Islam's method for changing attitudes, using Umar's compassion and Covey's train-station story.
- Defines paradigm as the lens underlying behavior and argues that the Qur'an reshapes beliefs before conduct.
- Urges tadabbur: read Qur'anic stories for concepts, examine one's own Pharaoh-like traits, and practice what is understood.
- Uses belief in the Akhirah to reframe death, motivation, and worldly versus eternal gain.
- Applies the Akhirah lens to financial and family life through charity, waqf, and continuing righteous deeds.
- Applies it to communal outlook through the People of the Trench, Surah Al-Imran 169, and the hadith about loving this world over the Akhirah.
In the khateeb's words
“The Qur'an did not merely, when he wants to change your attitude, did not merely give you a list of information, or start with rules, to change your behavior.”
“We should move it to the next stage, which is understanding and the concepts behind it, and also to adapt these concepts in our life.”
“So we use the lens of the Quran to understand our past, to navigate our present, and to prepare for our future.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that changing our actions begins with changing how we understand things. The khateeb shared examples of how learning someone's circumstances can replace judgment with compassion and practical help. He encouraged us to read the Qur'an thoughtfully, look at ourselves before judging others, and practice what we learn. He explained that belief in the hereafter can reshape how we use our money, care for our families, and understand success beyond this life. As a family, we can put these lessons into practice by listening patiently, giving generously, and praying for one another.
- What could you ask someone who seems upset or disruptive to understand what they are going through?
- How could you show kindness to a family member today and remember them in your du'a?
