Prayer and gratitude steady anxious hearts
“Should I not then be a grateful servant of Allah?”
In one sentence
Allah created mankind faint-hearted, panicking when hardship touches us and hoarding when blessing arrives, and the remedy is to tether ourselves to Him through regular prayer and deliberate gratitude.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opening: Surah al-Ma'arij, man created halu'a (faint-hearted), panics at difficulty (jazu'a)
- Modern complaining disguised as unsolicited problem-solving (Hajj hotel-room anecdote)
- Second extreme: when good touches him he withholds (manu'a), scarcity mindset and anxiety over provision
- The exception: al-musalleen, regular prayer as the daily tether, via reflection on Surah al-Fatiha
- Gratitude as remedy: Sulaiman's du'a in Surah an-Naml asking Allah for the ability to remain grateful
- Prophetic reframe: look at those who have less; whoever wakes safe, healthy, and fed owns the world
- Close: Aisha's question and the Prophet's answer, 'should I not be a grateful servant?'
Try this week
Hold a mirror to yourself: notice when you panic or lose control when things don't go your way, big or small
Stop disguised complaining, resist 'they should have done it this way' talk in moments where patience is the actual test
Maintain the five daily prayers with presence instead of reciting Surah al-Fatiha on autopilot
Actively ask Allah for the ability to be grateful, as Sulaiman did, rather than assuming gratitude is automatic
When comparing your life to others, deliberately look at those who have less rather than those who have more
Count baseline blessings, safety at home, health, food for the day, as possessing the whole world
Limit the scroll through social media feeds that push you to covet what others have
