Use five blessings before they are gone

In one sentence

Take advantage of five things before five others, youth before old age, health before sickness, free time before busyness, wealth before poverty, and life before death, by using each to obey and worship Allah before it is gone.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Opening khutbah formulae and definition of maw'idha (exhortation) as a heart-softener that works when hearts are pure
  2. Rebuke of distracted hearts: phones during khutbah, laughing/eating at funerals, Hasan al-Basri on the heedless man in the graveyard
  3. Introduction of the core hadith of Ibn Abbas: 'Take advantage of five before five'
  4. Youth before old age: worship while strong; warning against delaying repentance; youth raised in worship shaded on Judgment Day
  5. Health before sickness: deeds continue to be recorded when one falls ill; 'Know Allah in ease, He will know you in hardship' with two true stories (rain in the desert, cured cancer patient)
  6. Life before death: deeds stop at death; closing dua
Try this week
Use youthful energy for worship and obedience before old age instead of postponing religiosity
Establish consistent deeds (e.g. praying in congregation at the masjid) while healthy, since illness may prevent them
Spend free time on Quran reading, masjid attendance, and good deeds before busyness removes the chance
Give generously from wealth while at ease, as illustrated by the man who paid a year's rent for an evicted family
Avoid companions who waste your time in idle chat, and do not let phones distract you during the khutbah
Do daily self-accounting: regret any day that passes without an increase in good deeds
Sources the khateeb cited

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah was about a beautiful piece of advice from the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him: take advantage of five things before five other things come. The khateeb focused on using your youth before old age, your health before sickness, your free time before you get busy, and your life before death. He reminded us that these reminders only sink in when our hearts are clean and soft, not when we're scrolling on our phones or laughing through serious moments. He told amazing true stories, like a righteous man lost in the desert whom Allah saved with rain that fell only for him, and a generous man with stage 4 cancer who helped an evicted family and was then cured. The lesson is simple: know Allah when life is easy, and He will be there for you when life gets hard. So the question for our family is, what are we doing with the time and health we have right now?

  1. If you could only keep one thing from being young, energy, free time, or health, which would you miss most, and what's one good thing you can do with it this week?
  2. The khateeb said some people look at their phones during the khutbah, what do you think makes it hard for us to really pay attention when someone is reminding us about Allah?
  3. A man in the story helped a family who got evicted, and then something amazing happened, what would you have done if you were him?
