Imam Hasan chose peace to save lives
The sermon presents Imam Hasan’s treaty with Mu'awiyah as a principled effort to preserve Shia and Muslim lives, while commemorating his martyrdom and reaffirming loyalty to Ahlul Bayt.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with extended Arabic supplication, repentance, and praise of God.
- Commemorates Imam Hasan as the second Imam and master of the youth of Paradise.
- Explains Ahlul Bayt succession and the loss of communal support for Imam Ali and Imam Hasan.
- Describes the sulh with Mu'awiyah and its conditions for protecting Shia lives and rights.
- Recounts Imam Hasan’s poisoning and connects his suffering with the greater tragedy of Ashura.
- Concludes with prayers, mourning, Quran recitation, ritual worship, and requests for healing and relief.
In the khateeb's words
“this is better for Muslimin and for the Ummat of Islam”
“but there is no day like your day oh my brother Abu Abdullah in the day of Ashura”
For the dinner table
The khutbah remembered Imam Hassan al-Mujtaba and the difficult choices he faced when many people would not support him. The khateeb explained that Imam Hassan accepted a peace agreement to protect lives and safeguard his community, not for personal gain. Some people misunderstood this decision, but Imam Hassan taught that preserving people and serving Islam can require patience, restraint, and wisdom. The khutbah also described his final illness, his loving concern for Lady Zainab, and his closeness to Imam Hussain. It ended by encouraging prayer, remembrance, care for the sick, and loyalty to the path of the Ahlul Bayt.
- When can making peace be braver than continuing a fight?
- How can we support someone who is doing the right thing but feels alone?
- What is one way we can show gentleness to someone who is hurting?
