Build a strong community through truth and care
“The true Muslim is whoever the people feel safe from his tongue, meaning his speech, or from his hand.”
The khutbah in 7 steps
- The khutbah begins with taqwa and truthfulness.
- The Prophet’s four community-building instructions are introduced.
- Spreading peace means greeting people and ensuring they feel safe.
- Feeding people serves compassion, dawah, and social stability.
- Healthy families and maintained kinship are necessary for healthy societies.
- Tahajjud develops humility, discipline, and spiritual strength.
- The khutbah closes by urging implementation of all four qualities.
In the khateeb's words
“If people feel unsafe around us, starting with our neighbors, it's because we're not doing our job.”
“The true Muslim, not Muslim by name, the true Muslim is whoever the people feel safe from his tongue, meaning his speech, or from his hand.”
“People, when they're desperate and they're hungry, they can't hear any words that we say in their ears over the growling of their stomachs.”
“Healthy society means healthy family. And this is a religious obligation. To keep family ties.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that truthfulness and keeping our promises help us become people others can trust. He shared four teachings of the Prophet: spread peace, feed people, keep family ties, and pray at night while others sleep. Spreading peace means greeting others and helping them feel safe from hurtful words and actions. Feeding hungry people, whether Muslim or not, should come from wanting to please Allah and caring about their needs. He also encouraged us to care for our family relationships and make time for night prayer, which can strengthen our spiritual discipline. Together, these teachings show how worship and care for others belong in our everyday lives.
- What could you say or do tomorrow to help someone feel welcome and safe?
- How could our family share a good meal with someone who needs one?
- Which relative could we show care for this week, and how?
