Gratitude to Allah is daily worship

“The concept of shukr, showing gratitude, being thankful to Allah is not only once a year.”

The khateeb, at 4:42

In one sentence

True gratitude to Allah is a continuous act of worship: recognize every blessing, praise Him, and use those blessings in obedience before they are withdrawn.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Defines shukr as daily gratitude rather than an annual Thanksgiving practice, distinguishing it from praise.
  2. Uses everyday examples and Surah Al-Nahlah to show that visible and hidden blessings surround people constantly.
  3. Explains gratitude through the heart, tongue, and limbs, including family reminders and obedient use of blessings.
  4. Presents Ibn al-Qayyim's five principles of gratitude and the Prophet's example of prolonged prayer.
  5. Reframes wealth as safety, health, and sufficient daily food, while remembering suffering in Gaza, Sudan, and elsewhere.
  6. Applies the message to Thanksgiving and parenting: train children to recognize blessings and say Alhamdulillah before loss creates regret.
Try this week
Say Alhamdulillah after eating, drinking, studying, and waking from sleep.
Remind children and family members to name specific blessings rather than merely repeat Alhamdulillah.
Use blessings obediently: give sadaqa, avoid haram, refrain from backbiting and lying, and walk or drive to the masjid or to help someone.
Reflect on daily safety, health, shelter, food, and mobility as blessings from Allah.
Practice gratitude for minor blessings so major blessings are recognized and appreciated.

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that thanking Allah belongs in every day, not just once a year. Food, water, shelter, and even the ways our bodies keep working while we sleep give us reasons to say Alhamdulillah. He explained that gratitude involves our hearts recognizing Allah’s gifts, our tongues praising Him, and our actions using those gifts in ways that please Him. That can mean giving charity, speaking truthfully, and walking to help someone. As a family, we can help one another notice everyday blessings and name what we are thanking Allah for.

  1. What is one small blessing you noticed today that you usually forget about?
  2. How could you use something Allah has given you to help someone tomorrow?
  3. When we say Alhamdulillah after this meal, what are we thanking Allah for?
