Islam is mercy through faith and justice
“Every time a gangster or thug embraces Islam, crime is removed from our communities.”
Islam is a mercy for non-Muslims, both because embracing it is the best thing that can happen to them, and because practicing Muslims are religiously obligated to treat them with honor, safety, and justice.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening: rising Islamophobia is irrelevant as long as Allah is pleased with us
- The best thing for a non-Muslim is to accept Islam (shahada leads to Paradise)
- The second best is for Muslims to practice Islam, because Allah forbade oppression
- Scenarios: Muslim neighbors, coworkers, spouses, employees must honor and protect non-Muslims
- Hijabi women and lowered gazes mean safer homes and workplaces
- Islam removes drunk drivers, drug dealers, and gangsters from communities
- Anecdote: Brother Yusuf from New York, 'thank God you didn't meet me before I was Muslim'
- Critique of assimilation: non-Muslims don't want Muslims imitating their vices; closing dua for firmness on Islam
In the khateeb's words
“whoever says nothing has the right to be worshipped except for Allah and they are truthful with it they shall enter paradise”
“he does not believe in me the one who goes to bed with a full stomach while his next door neighbor is hungry and he knows it”
“every time a gangster or thug embraces islam crime is removed from our communities”
For the dinner table
In this Eid al-Adha khutbah, the khateeb reminded us that Islam is a mercy not just for Muslims, but for everyone, even people who never accept it. He explained that a true Muslim cannot oppress or harm others, because Allah Himself has forbidden oppression. A practicing Muslim honors his neighbor, refuses to sleep full while that neighbor is hungry, treats women with respect, works honestly, and would never steal or cheat, because he knows his Lord is always watching. The khateeb shared a powerful story about a brother who used to live a rough life, and how Islam turned him into an honorable man, proof that every time someone embraces Islam, our whole community becomes safer and better. He encouraged us to stay firm and grateful for the gift of Islam, because when we live it properly, even non-Muslims feel safer having us around.
- The khateeb said Muslims shouldn't fear getting caught, they should remember Allah is watching. What's a situation where that's easy, and one where it's hard?
- What's one thing you could do this week that would make a non-Muslim think, 'Wow, Muslims make this place better'?
