Gratitude turns blessings into worship

“The fact that I thank Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for anything, for any blessing, is another blessing in itself.”

The khateeb, at 87:48

In one sentence

A thankful servant recognizes every blessing as from Allah, praises Him, and turns those blessings into worship and service, because gratitude benefits the servant and is itself a test.

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah was about being a thankful servant of Allah. Allah describes Prophet Nuh with just two words: a servant who was always thankful. Prophet Sulaiman, who had amazing gifts like understanding an ant and having a throne brought to him in the blink of an eye, saw each blessing as a test of whether he would be grateful. The khateeb also told us that our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) prayed at night until his feet hurt, and when he was asked why, he said, 'Should I not be a thankful servant?' We thank Allah in three ways: with our hearts by remembering that everything comes from Him, with our tongues by saying Alhamdulillah, and with our actions by worshipping Him and using what He gave us to help others. Being able to thank Allah is itself another blessing, so we can never thank Him enough, but our gratitude only benefits us, because Allah doesn't need anything from us.

  1. What is one thing you used today without thinking about it, like water, your eyes, or your legs, that is actually a gift from Allah?
  2. Prophet Sulaiman smiled and thanked Allah when he heard a tiny ant talking. What small thing made you smile today that you could thank Allah for?
  3. If Allah gave you a special talent or skill, how could you use it this week to help someone else as a way of saying thank you to Him?
