Allah sees us in public and private
“If you're unable to see Allah Azzawajalla, then know that He surely sees you.”
Recognizing Allah as al-Raqeeb, the Ever-Watchful, should inspire sincere worship and upright choices in both public and private life.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces al-Raqeeb and Allah’s complete awareness of deeds, words, and hidden intentions.
- Warns that hidden motives will be exposed and recounts three people punished for insincere deeds.
- Explains muraqabah and ihsan as worshipping with awareness that Allah sees you.
- Urges listeners to renew their intentions in worship, learning, charity, reminders, and service.
- Applies the lesson to students, social pressure, private temptations, and phone use.
- Calls for patience, uprightness, halal pursuits, and accountability after leaving the masjid.
In the khateeb's words
“It is to worship Allah As if you see Him And if you're unable to see Allah Azzawajalla Then know That He surely sees you”
“So let us renew our intentions Make your intentions solely For the sake of Allah Even if no one recognizes you Even if no one shares their gratitude Strive Every moment To please your creator”
“Even in the darkness of the night When there's no one In your vicinity And it's just you and your phone Know that ar-raqib Is present”
For the dinner table
The khutbah taught us that Allah is al-Raqeeb, the One who always watches, hears, and knows what we do and what we hide. Because Allah knows our intentions, worship and good deeds should be for Him even when nobody notices or thanks us. The speaker described ihsan as worshipping Allah as though we see Him, while knowing that He surely sees us. This awareness should help us resist pressure and private temptations, remain upright, and choose halal and righteous deeds. We can leave the masjid by asking what we will do differently in the moments when only Allah sees us.
- What is one choice this week where remembering that Allah sees us could help you?
- How can we do a good deed sincerely when nobody notices?
- What does it mean to stay upright when friends pressure us to fit in?
