For the dinner table

Today the khateeb reminded us that mothers are one of Allah's greatest blessings and a reflection of His mercy. He shared a hadith from Imam Sadiq (a.s.): if your mother calls you while you are praying, you should even break your prayer to go to her, because of how much she has sacrificed and how deeply she feels things. He said that often our parents don't need our money as much as our time, attention, kindness and respect, and that we usually only value a blessing once it's gone. He explained that in Islam our parents, spouse and children are all one family, and we must be fair to every one of them. He also shared hadiths that a noble person always treats women with respect, that Paradise lies beneath the feet of mothers, that daughters are a special blessing, and that a person bringing gifts home should give to the girls first. In the second khutbah he asked us to speak up against unjust war, Islamophobia, and the arrests of scholars and believers in Kuwait and Bahrain.

  1. What is one thing you could do this week to show Mom (or Grandma) that you appreciate her, without spending any money?
  2. Why do you think the Prophet said the way someone treats women shows whether they are truly noble?
  3. What is a blessing you have right now that you might be taking for granted?
