Only faith and good deeds remain

In one sentence

Believers should glorify Allah morning and evening, complete the prescribed dhikr after every obligatory prayer, and come early and attentively to Jumu'ah, because only Allah and a sound heart can avail a person after death.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Opening on Tawhid and the command to remember Allah morning and evening from Surah al-Rum
  2. This worldly life is a test and a prison for the believer but a paradise for those who follow desire
  3. Wealth, family, and status cannot help in the Hereafter; only faith and good deeds remain
  4. True contentment, sleep, beauty, and cure come from Allah, not from money
  5. The dhikr after obligatory prayers: 33 tasbih, 33 tahmid, 33 takbir, and la ilaha illallah to complete 100, which brings forgiveness of sins
  6. The obligation and tremendous reward of coming early to Jumu'ah and listening to the khutbah
  7. Closing reminder that prayer is only valid when offered with a present heart
Try this week
After every obligatory prayer say 33 times SubhanAllah, 33 times Alhamdulillah, 33 times Allahu Akbar, and then la ilaha illallah to complete 100
Come to Jumu'ah before the Imam comes out for the khutbah to receive the full reward
Take a full shower (ghusl) for Jumu'ah
Stop buying, selling, and other engagements once the Jumu'ah time has entered
Listen attentively to the khutbah rather than arriving after the Imam has begun
Offer every prayer with a present, focused heart

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminded us that Allah is One, entirely merciful, and that this life is a test in which we can choose good or sin. Worldly life may feel restrictive for a believer because obedience sometimes means giving up what we want, while the Hereafter offers lasting joy for those who follow Allah. Wealth, possessions, and even family cannot save us after death; what matters is faith, good deeds, and a sound heart free of hatred and filled with love for Allah and goodwill toward others. We were encouraged to remember Allah morning and evening and to recite dhikr after each obligatory prayer. The khutbah also urged us to arrive early for Jumu'ah and pray with a present heart.

  1. What is one choice you made today where you could pause and remember Allah?
  2. How can we show goodwill to someone in our family this week?
  3. What would help us arrive earlier for Jumu'ah and pray with a present heart?
