Surah al-Fatihah should guide daily life
“You are signing a contract with Allah.”
The khutbah argues that understanding and living Surah al-Fatihah should shape a Muslim’s worship, reliance on Allah, steadfastness, and daily decisions.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Urges Muslims to seek understanding of religion, not memorization alone.
- Introduces Surah al-Fatihah as the foundational chapter recited in every prayer.
- Explains praise of Allah as Sustainer and the meanings of His mercy.
- Discusses Allah’s ownership of the Day of Judgment.
- Presents exclusive worship and reliance on Allah as a daily covenant.
- Explains continual guidance, steadfastness, and istikhara for important decisions.
In the khateeb's words
“It will be sad if you call yourself a Muslim, especially those of us who are born Muslims.”
“This is a covenant we're saying every single day and we don't pay attention to it. You are signing a contract with Allah.”
“If you want to ask, ask who? Ask Allah. If you want to seek assistance, seek assistance from Allah.”
“Anything a Muslim wants to embark on, you just don't take decision. You have to seek Allah's guidance.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah focused on Surah al-Fatihah, the chapter we recite in every prayer. The khateeb reminded us that knowing Islam means understanding its message, not only memorizing words. He explained that we praise Allah as our Sustainer, trust His mercy and judgment, and promise to worship and ask help from Him alone. Because hearts can change, we should keep asking Allah for the straight path and use istikhara when making important choices. This week, we can slow down in al-Fatihah, reflect on its meaning, and teach one of its lessons to our children.
- Which part of al-Fatihah helps you when life is difficult, and why?
- What is one decision for which you could ask Allah’s guidance this week?
- How can we show mercy to someone around us?
