For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah reminded us that Allah commands justice and calls us to ihsan: treating others with excellence, generosity, patience, and forgiveness. The khateeb described how the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, brought together mercy and justice and challenged discrimination. He recalled the hardship of the boycott against the Prophet’s clans in Mecca and connected it to the suffering of people in Gaza. He urged us to keep caring, speak against oppression, and make dua even when we feel overwhelmed or unsure how much difference we can make. He also reminded us to keep hope in Allah and continue our daily responsibilities, so that grief does not stop us from doing good.

  1. What is one way you could give more kindness than you receive this week?
  2. What would you like to ask Allah for the children and families in Gaza?
  3. When sad news feels overwhelming, what helps you keep caring and find something helpful to do?
