Seven ways to earn Allah's shade

“They remember Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala when they are sitting by themselves and they remember the hereafter and the day of judgment and their hearts are softened.”

The khateeb, at 33:42

In one sentence

Muslims should strive to embody the seven categories of people whom Allah will shade under His shade on the Day of Judgment, beginning with just leadership and including devoted youth, mosque-attached hearts, love for Allah's sake, moral courage, secret charity, and tearful private remembrance.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. The khutbah opens by stressing the balance between religious scholars and just rulers as foundations of a righteous society.
  2. First category: the just ruler who shoulders responsibility even for the weakest under his care.
  3. Second category: the young person who resists peer pressure and temptation to grow up in Allah's obedience.
  4. Third category: those whose hearts are attached to the mosques, praying and serving the community.
  5. Fourth category: people who love one another sincerely for Allah's sake.
  6. Fifth category: those who refuse illicit temptation, following the examples of Yusuf and Maryam.
  7. Sixth and seventh categories: those who give charity secretly and those who remember Allah privately until tears flow.
  8. Conclusion: strive to embody one or more of these seven categories and teach them to family.
Try this week
Bring children to the masjid regularly so their hearts become attached to it from a young age.
Come to the masjid at least two or three times during the week if one cannot come every day.
When moving, prioritize finding a strong Muslim community and masjid.
Refuse unlawful relationships, online temptation, and workplace advances, following the examples of Yusuf and Maryam.
Give charity secretly when possible, while also being visible enough to encourage others.
Sit alone and remember Allah and the hereafter until the heart softens and tears flow.
Teach the seven categories to family and others so they may also seek Allah's shade.

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminded us that Allah honors people who live with justice and care for those entrusted to them. It especially encouraged young people to resist temptations and grow up with worship, good friends, supportive parents, and a lasting connection to the masjid. It also praised friendships built for Allah’s sake, choosing halal over haram, giving charity quietly, and remembering Allah alone with a softened heart. The khateeb invited every person and family to choose one, two, or even all seven qualities and practice them consistently. May Allah guide our families, protect us from trials, accept our good deeds, and shade us on the Day when there is no shade but His.

  1. What is one way our family can help our hearts stay connected to the masjid?
  2. When might it be hardest to say no to something wrong, and what could help us choose Allah’s pleasure?
