Your legacy lives in others
“Your legacy is your story told in the life of others.”
A person's true worth is measured by seeking Allah's pleasure and leaving a lasting legacy of benefit through service, teaching, and nurturing the next generation.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- The khutbah opens with community announcements, prayers for deceased and ill community members, and concern over a serious highway accident.
- It asks whether the heavens and earth mourn a person's departure, presenting Allah's pleasure as the believer's central concern.
- It argues that deeds, not appearance or status, determine one's rank, and that the most beloved people are those who benefit humanity.
- Abdul Rahman Sumait is presented as an example of enduring service through conversions, orphanages, schools, and wells.
- Listeners are challenged to consider what their mosque and family would lose after their death and to repair their legacy while alive.
- The khutbah encourages ongoing investments in teaching Qur'an, building masajid, digging wells, and other deeds whose rewards continue after death.
- It closes by announcing a youth-focused scholarly Q&A on doubts and urging parents to keep children connected to mosques, classes, and halaqas.
In the khateeb's words
“Their main concern from the moment they wake up till the moment they go back to sleep.”
“When they see a brother and sister in need anywhere in the world, they rush and they help.”
“Our actions determine our grade, our status, our level in the sight of Allah azza wa jal.”
“Your legacy is your story told in the life of others.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah asks us to think about what our community and family would lose if we died. It teaches that our rank with Allah depends on what we do, especially how much benefit we bring to others. Small, steady acts, helping someone pay rent, visiting the sick, volunteering, teaching Qur'an, or supporting a well or masjid, can continue rewarding us after death. We should begin building that legacy now instead of waiting for a second chance. Parents are also urged to keep children close to the masjid, classes, and halaqas, while making room for their questions about faith.
- What could our family do this week to help someone who needs support?
- What would you want our family to be remembered for?
- How can we make the masjid and faith welcoming places for everyone's questions?
