Find hope by feeling the Quran
“When you read a verse from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's book how does it connect to your heart and your mind?”
The Qur'an should be approached through tadabbur, personally feeling and reflecting on its verses, especially its promises of mercy, justice, reward, and divine care, so believers live with hope and respond to hardship with faith and goodness.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Distinguishes tadabbur, personal reflection, from tafsir, scholarly interpretation.
- Introduces verses of hope as daily spiritual nourishment.
- Explores hope through Jannah, mercy, forgiveness, justice, and Allah's record of good deeds.
- Reassures listeners about human weakness, doubts, youthful mistakes, and repentance.
- Applies Qur'anic hope to hardship through patience, divine decree, and trust in provision.
- Encourages a daily practice of reading and feeling one hopeful verse.
- Addresses unrest, attacks on immigrants, and Middle East conflict by urging goodness, solidarity, justice, and prayer for innocents.
In the khateeb's words
“When you read a verse from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's book how does it connect to your heart and your mind? What does it make you feel?”
“When you wake up in the morning, look for one of these verses of hope, read it, feel it, let it give you a charge of positivity for your day.”
“Whenever you have confusions or thoughts in your mind that you don't have answers, ask Allah to show you how to understand it and believe in it in the proper way.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah taught us that tadabbur means slowing down with the Qur'an and letting its words reach our hearts; it is personal reflection, not pretending to be a scholar of tafsir. We were encouraged to choose a verse of hope each morning and let it shape our day. Allah's mercy, justice, forgiveness, and remembrance of every good deed give us reason to keep repenting and doing good, even when we feel guilty or unseen. Questions, doubts, past mistakes, and hardship do not make us hopeless; we can ask Allah for clarity and remain patient. When we see injustice around us, we should command goodness, stand for truth, and pray for innocent people.
- What verse or Qur'anic message could you read in the morning to begin the day with hope?
- How can we respond when we remember a past mistake or face a confusing question?
- What is one good action we can take when we notice unfairness or someone being treated badly?
