The ummah must care for the hungry
“If we want to be part of the ummah on the day of Qiyamah, we must be part of the ummah while we're living today.”
Because the Muslim ummah is one body, believers must respond to suffering through prayer, responsible giving, fasting, gratitude, and refusing food waste.
The khutbah in 4 steps
- Islam gives dignity and belonging to forgotten people, making the ummah one body.
- Prophetic examples show grief over murdered teachers and hungry companions, prompting communal responsibility.
- Gaza’s starvation reveals injustice and calls listeners to recognize food as a blessing.
- Listeners are urged to fast, donate, pray, feed others, and avoid wasting or displaying food.
In the khateeb's words
“if we want to be part of the ummah on the day of qiyamah, we must be part of the ummah while we're living today.”
“how will I ever understand what my nation is going through? How will I ever understand what concerns them?”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that Muslims are one ummah, so another person’s hunger should matter to us. The Prophet grieved when believers suffered and urged people to share what they had. We should treat food as Allah’s blessing by praying for hungry families, avoiding waste, and not showing off abundance. We can fast on Mondays and Thursdays, donate when possible, and feed others as an act of charity. Gratitude means enjoying what Allah gives while remembering and helping those who have less.
- What food do we sometimes waste, and how could we prevent that?
- How can we remember hungry families when we eat our favorite meal?
- What does it mean to be part of one ummah this week?
