Muslims must study the Quran for themselves
“If we are really going to be successful with this religion, we have to study the Quran for ourself.”
Muslims should treat worship as collective service to God's will, pursuing righteous social responsibility through Quranic and prophetic study, peaceful community-building, and guidance suited to Muslim life in America.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Emphasizes communal life and adherence to the Quran and Sunnah.
- Defines the Muslim community's responsibility to promote good and oppose wrong.
- Explains worship as serving God's will through responsible work in the world.
- Connects submission, peace, fitrah, and the prophetic search for guidance.
- Frames Islam as a perfected religion aimed at establishing righteous order.
- Addresses inherited sectarian conflict and confusion among Muslims in America.
- Urges independent study of the Quran and Prophet's life, applied to American conditions.
In the khateeb's words
“The group life is more important than the individual life.”
“To serve God is to work for God. And to serve Allah, it has two main meanings.”
“If we are really going to be successful with this religion, we have to study the Quran for ourself.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that our community has work to do for the benefit of all people. He explained that worshiping Allah includes serving His will by taking responsibility for our lives, our families, our communities, and the environment. He encouraged us to make contributions today that future generations can carry forward. He also spoke about protecting the peaceful, loving nature of children and warned against bringing inherited conflicts into our relationships with others. He urged us to study the Quran and the Prophet’s life ourselves, apply that guidance to our needs here, and recognize the contribution we can make with Allah’s help.
- What helps you feel peaceful and cared for at home, and how could we create more of it?
- What question about your daily life would you like us to explore together while studying the Quran?
