Gratitude turns blessings into worship
“Every day either you are going forward or backward.”
Iman requires continual forward movement through patience and gratitude, recognizing Allah’s blessings of existence, provision, and guidance and expressing thankfulness through the heart, tongue, and actions.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The khateeb connects the sacred months and year-end reflection to evaluating one’s faith and asking whether one is progressing or regressing.
- He presents patience and gratitude as the two foundations of iman, with patience enabling genuine gratitude.
- He identifies three divine blessings: existence, provision, and guidance, emphasizing that guidance is more valuable than material wealth.
- He explains Friday adhan etiquette and uses it to illustrate dependence on Allah for guidance and success.
- He defines gratitude as heart-based belief, verbal praise, and sharing blessings through action.
- He applies the lesson through the Prophet’s worship, tests of wealth and deprivation, Surah al-Kahf’s trials, and appreciation of everyday community blessings.
In the khateeb's words
“every day either you are going forward or backward. There is nothing stopping.”
“The love comes based on the result of the test.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb invited us to pause and take stock of our faith, thinking about how we are growing each day. He connected gratitude with patience, explaining that patience helps us become thankful. He grouped Allah’s blessings into life, provision, and guidance, reminding us that provision includes much more than money. Gratitude begins with recognizing in our hearts that our blessings come from Allah, then thanking Him with our words and sharing what we have. As a family, we can notice the gifts we take for granted and choose a way to use them to help others.
- What is one blessing besides money that you noticed today?
- When was it hard to be patient today, and what helped you?
- What blessing could our family share with someone this week?
