Honor mothers through service and care

“There is no contradiction between the hadith and what I mentioned in the ayah.”

The khateeb, at 10:08

In one sentence

Islam gives mothers a uniquely elevated status because of the exclusive hardships of pregnancy, delivery, and weaning, and truly honoring them means serving them, and one's household, with kindness, gentleness, and care, especially in their old age.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Resolves the apparent tension between the Quran's command of equal kindness to parents and the hadith giving the mother 75% of one's attention
  2. Tafsir of Surah al-Ahqaf 46:15: the three maternal hardships of pregnancy, delivery, and weaning over 30 months
  3. Hadith of the man who wanted to join the army: 'paradise lies under her feet' (al-Nasa'i, graded hasan by al-Albani)
  4. Ibn Umar and the man carrying his mother through Tawaf: it did not repay even one painful cry of delivery
  5. The Prophet's own reverence for his mother Amina (grave visit at al-Abwa) and his foster mother Halima at the conquest of Mecca
  6. Hajar's search for water behind the Sa'i: trust in Allah must be paired with effort
  7. Balancing honor between one's mother and one's wife; the 'how': the Prophet served his own household
  8. Closing dua for guidance to the straight path
Try this week
Serve your mother and stay with her rather than pursuing other duties when she needs you
Pitch in and help with household work instead of sitting on the couch, following the Prophet's example of serving his family
Honor both your mother and your wife without treating one at the expense of the other
Treat aging parents with kindness, gentleness, and care as they develop mental weaknesses and helplessness
Pair trust in Allah with active effort, as Hajar did when searching for water
Read Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad (available online with English translation)
