Prepare for Ramadan by honoring the masjid
“Shaaban, it is the road to Ramadan.”
As Ramadan approaches, believers should prepare by reviving their relationship with the masjid through regular prayer, cleanliness, respectful conduct, community care, and sincere service.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Sha'ban is presented as training for Ramadan through worship, charity, and reflective Qur'an engagement.
- Maintaining a masjid means both physical upkeep and spiritually enlivening it through regular worship.
- Attachment to the masjid is measured by attendance, humility, prayer, and community relationships.
- Neglect, lateness, poor manners, theft, and disorder violate the masjid's trust and harm fellow worshippers.
- Cleanliness, especially in bathrooms and wudu areas, is a private test of faith and sincerity.
- The congregation is urged to enter Ramadan early, responsibly, and cooperatively while preserving the masjid's dignity.
In the khateeb's words
“Shaaban, it is the road to Ramadan. And it is the training ground before the great encounter.”
“Because the masjid is not just walls and carpet. It is a reflection of our iman.”
“You watch where their feet go and the place that they frequent the most.”
“Go early. Try and pray as many of the salawat you can in them. Sit in them often.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Shaaban is a time to prepare our hearts and habits for Ramadan through worship, charity, and thoughtful reading of the Quran. He explained that caring for the masjid means both maintaining the building and bringing it to life with prayer, remembrance, learning, and good manners. Keeping bathrooms clean, putting shoes away, and removing hazards help protect other worshippers and their peace during prayer. He also urged us to learn each other's names, check on one another, and respect the belongings entrusted to the masjid. As a family, we can prepare for Ramadan by choosing small, sincere acts of care, remembering that Allah sees even the good we do quietly.
- What is one habit you would like to practice before Ramadan begins?
- How could we help someone at the masjid feel welcome and included?
- What small act of cleaning or helping could you do without looking for praise?
