Small deeds earn great rewards from Allah
“Islam is all about serving the people.”
The khutbah teaches that Allah is Al-Shakur, who knows and abundantly rewards even small sincere deeds, so believers should express gratitude through praise, obedience, service, forgiveness, peacemaking, and responsible use of blessings.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Al-Shakur as Allah's name meaning He appreciates and abundantly rewards.
- Distinguishes verbal belief from living by Allah's names and recognizing His knowledge of every deed.
- Explains that small efforts can receive immense reward, including the promise of Paradise.
- Defines gratitude as praising Allah in the heart and tongue, and obeying Him through action.
- Applies gratitude to serving people, forgiving, peacemaking, environmental care, and small acts of kindness.
- Closes by urging listeners to use blessings responsibly and continue gratitude through worship and service.
In the khateeb's words
“we save the ocean we don't pollute the water we don't pollute the air we don't destroy the forest we don't cut the trees”
“Islam is all about serving the people giving hope to the people listening to the people connecting with the people forgiving the people”
For the dinner table
Today Imam Dr. Mutaz Charaf spoke about Allah's name Al-Shakur, explaining that Allah appreciates our good deeds and gives far more than the little we do. Even when other people do not notice our efforts, Allah knows them and does not let them go to waste. The imam reminded us to notice everyday blessings, including food, health, knowledge, faith, and the love we have for one another. When someone helps us, we should thank Allah for making that help possible and thank the person for choosing kindness. Gratitude also means taking action: helping a neighbor, sharing what we have, forgiving others, and caring for Allah's creation.
- What blessing did you enjoy today that you usually forget to notice?
- Who helped you this week, and how could you show them your thanks?
- The imam told a story about helping an elderly neighbor get her newspaper; what small act could you do to make someone's day easier?
