Remember good before resentment erases it
“Don't forget the favors of people in the most difficult times, in the most challenging times.”
To preserve relationships, we should remember people's past kindness, express gratitude, reciprocate it, and forgive their mistakes instead of letting one hurt erase the good.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- A personal incident shows how one harsh message can eclipse much previous good.
- The Prophet's response to the Ansar recalls their sacrifices and values companionship over material spoils.
- The lesson is applied to spouses, relatives, friends, and other relationships.
- Five practices are given: recall good, counter gossip, make dua, express and return gratitude, and remember personal faults.
- Prayer and Quran recitations conclude, followed by an Islamic-school donation announcement.
In the khateeb's words
“are you not satisfied O people of the Ansar that these people will leave with some camels while you will go back with the Messenger of Allah in your home”
“don't forget the favors of people in the most difficult times in the most challenging times remember the good whether it's with your spouse when they say something rude or do something you don't like remember the good”
“how you would love Allah to forgive you for what you've done and you know what you've done”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us to remember the good people have done for us, especially when something they say or do hurts us. The khateeb shared how the Prophet remembered the Ansar's kindness and support even when they were upset about the distribution of the spoils of war. He encouraged us to recall a person's goodness immediately when we feel wronged and to mention their kindness when others speak badly about them. We can also make dua for people, thank them for specific things they have done, and return their kindness when we can. Remembering our own mistakes and how much we want Allah to forgive us can help us forgive others more readily.
- What kind thing has someone done for you that you would like to thank them for?
- When you feel upset with a friend or sibling, what good memory could help you respond kindly?
- Who has helped you in the past, and what dua would you like to make for them tonight?
