Focused prayer brings us closer to Allah
“There is a mechanism in our faith which allows us to have a direct conversation with Allah on a daily basis.”
The quality of one’s salah shapes accountability and closeness to Allah, so believers should cultivate focused prayer through preparation, correct movements, and reflection.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with Qur’anic reminders about taqwa, truthful speech, family responsibility, and obedience.
- Presents salah as a daily direct conversation with Allah and a central deed on Judgment Day.
- Explains Ibn al-Qayyim’s five levels of prayer, from negligence and distraction to deep spiritual absorption.
- Describes the consequences of each level, culminating in closeness to Allah.
- Offers three practices: schedule around prayer starts, slow the movements, and clear the mind beforehand.
- Closes with supplications for forgiveness, accepted worship, guidance, and community wellbeing.
In the khateeb's words
“There is a mechanism in our faith Which allows us to have a direct conversation with Allah on a daily basis”
“If their salah is good If their prayer is good Everything else will be easy But if their salah is not good Then the rest of it will also be hard and difficult”
For the dinner table
This khutbah reminded us that salah gives us a chance to speak directly with Allah every day. The khateeb shared five levels of prayer described by Ibn al-Qayyim, from neglecting its basic requirements to praying with deep attention and closeness to Allah. He explained that struggling against distractions and returning our attention to prayer is a meaningful effort. Understanding what we recite can help us reflect and appreciate our time with Allah. He encouraged us to plan our days around the beginning of prayer times, slow down our movements, and sit quietly for a few minutes before praying. He ended by asking Allah to forgive our shortcomings, accept our prayers, and help us experience the sweetness of prayer.
- What would help you feel more ready to talk to Allah when prayer time comes?
- Which words that we say in salah would you like us to learn about together?
- How could our family make a little quiet time before prayer?
