Ask Allah first before seeking help

“Before you ask people, ask Allah first.”

The khateeb, at 17:14

In one sentence

True tawhid means recognizing that Allah alone controls benefit, harm, and outcomes, then turning to Him first and letting that awareness shape obedience, patience, and conduct.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Reflect on passing time, mortality, and standing before Allah with a sound heart.
  2. Distinguish intellectual belief in one God from tawhid lived within the heart.
  3. Explain “la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah” through medicine, fire, and created means.
  4. Apply tawhid by asking Allah first, avoiding haram, and fulfilling obligations.
  5. Develop tawakkul, patience, and good conduct when facing life’s trials and frustrations.
  6. Examine who rules the heart and invite Allah’s guidance to govern one’s life.

For the dinner table

The sermon reminded us that our lives are moving toward a meeting with Allah, so what matters most is the condition of our hearts, not money, status, or popularity. True tawhid means knowing that Allah alone controls benefit, harm, and outcomes, while still using medicine, asking people, and taking responsible means. We should turn to Allah first, avoid disobedience when seeking a benefit, and respond to difficulties with trust, patience, and good character. The khateeb invited us to ask who rules our hearts and to let Allah’s guidance shape our prayers, choices, and reactions. We also prayed for relief for people suffering in Gaza, Palestine, and around the world.

  1. What is one problem where you can ask Allah first and then take a helpful step?
  2. When something goes wrong this week, how could you respond with more patience?
  3. What can compete for the “king” of your heart, and how can you make room for Allah’s guidance?
