Paradise should lead to righteous deeds
“Your pious actions are a reflection of your belief.”
Paradise is the eternal reward Allah promises to people of taqwa, those who live in worship, repentance, and good deeds, and contemplating its reality should motivate believers to venerate Jumu'ah, guard their prayers, and stay away from haram.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening exhortation to taqwa: the one who has Allah has everything figured out despite dunya's constant ups and downs
- You die the way you lived: habitual worship (Fajr, sadaqah, Hajj) shapes your ending, as does habitual sin
- Venerating and anticipating Jumu'ah and the khutbah is from the piety of hearts; the khutbah itself is dhikr of Allah
- Surah Maryam's three core themes: Allah's essence, prophets and messengers, and the unseen (Jannah, Jahannam, Day of Judgment)
- The prophets fell in prostration weeping at Allah's verses; later generations lost the plot by abandoning prayer and following desires
- Repentance, faith, and righteous deeds lead to Jannah: belief without action is empty
- Description of paradise from Surah Maryam: no idle or hurtful speech, only peace; constant provision in continuous light
- People enter paradise and hell in groups by their deeds; Jannah as motivator and Jahannam as deterrent, closing with hadiths on paradise's unimaginable bliss and eternal youth at 33
In the khateeb's words
“Because the person who has taqwa, he has Allah. And the person who has Allah, he has everything figured out.”
“No, you die and you'll pass away the way you lived your life.”
“because belief without pious actions is a lie because your pious actions are a reflection of your belief”
“The heart is a vessel, man It reacts to what you hear And what you see And what you eat It reacts”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us to keep Allah first and live with taqwa, because dunya is always changing while salah and iman help us persevere. We should live Islam consistently and regularly assess how our choices prepare us for the Day of Judgment. Jumu'ah is a special gift, so we should look forward to it and honor the khutbah, masjid, and other sacred parts of our faith. Surah Maryam teaches that Allah’s prophets lived with faith and humility, while Jannah is promised to those who repent, believe, and do good deeds. Paradise is a place of lasting joy, peace, good companionship, and freedom from hurtful speech, so it should motivate us to love halal and leave haram.
- What is one good deed you would love for Allah to see you doing regularly?
- What makes Jumu'ah feel special or exciting to you?
- What kind of words make a family gathering feel peaceful and uplifting?
