A welcoming masjid serves the community
“The mission is service; it starts at our homes.”
A masjid founded on taqwa should be a welcoming sanctuary where Muslims practice humility, love, knowledge, and selfless service beginning at home and extending into the wider community.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The Prophet’s establishment of Masjid al-Quba presents the masjid as the center of communal life.
- The masjid must be grounded in taqwa, humility, collective responsibility, and respectful conduct.
- The community should welcome sinners, newcomers, sisters, and children while providing safety and belonging.
- Love is expressed through sacrifice and service rather than status, wealth, bravado, or worldly achievement.
- Members should develop knowledge and useful skills, then serve their families and community with competence.
- The sermon closes with a vision for greater Baltimore and invitations to upcoming classes and programs.
In the khateeb's words
“The masjid does not need us In the sense of our individuality It needs us As a collective body Working towards a goal”
“We need to establish An environment Where people know That sinners are welcome”
“Is there a reward for good Other than good No matter where it's done Or who it's perpetuated on”
“The mission is service It starts at our homes And it starts with our families Then it starts with our community”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that the masjid should be built on taqwa, or sincere awareness of Allah, and should serve as a true center of community life. Everyone should enter with humility and help make the masjid welcoming to sinners, newcomers, sisters, and children. Love is shown through safety, respect, and generous service rather than status, money, or bravado. The speaker urged people to learn, discover their useful skills, and begin serving at home before serving the wider community. He also encouraged people to show up for the masjid’s classes, follow-up gatherings, and Revert Revival brunch.
- What is one way we can make people feel more welcome at our masjid?
- What skill or strength could you use to serve others this week?
- How can our family begin serving at home and then help our community?
