Silence protects the reward of prayer
“The word lagha means null and void.”
Because the Jumu'ah khutbah is itself half of the Friday prayer, worshippers must observe prayer-level silence and reverence during it and prepare for Friday early and with ihsan (excellence) in order not to nullify the reward of their Jumu'ah.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening Arabic khutbah formulae and recitation of Surah al-Jumu'ah 62:9 plus hadith on sending salawat on Friday
- Recap of Part 1: talking, phones, and latecomers stepping over shoulders nullify the Jumu'ah (faqad lagha)
- The concept of ihsan: three Quranic meanings, anchored in Surah al-Kahf 18:30
- Word-by-word tafsir of Surah al-Jumu'ah 62:9, the call, sa'y (striving), and zikr meaning the khutbah itself
- The khutbah replaces the first two rak'ahs of Zuhr, so everything prohibited in prayer is prohibited during it
- Friday's virtues: a special hour of accepted dua, best day the sun rises on, better than both Eids, closing businesses during prayer time
- Command to send abundant salawat on the Prophet on Friday and to recite Surah al-Kahf; conclusion deferred to next week
- Dua for a sick congregant, general supplications, and the standard closing of the second khutbah
In the khateeb's words
“sallallahu alayhi wa sallam anybody who engage in these kind of activities faqad lagha you know and the word lagha means null and void that person has destroyed the devotional deed for which the person came to the masjid”
“respected brothers and sisters in Islam last week we started a new topic because we see here very frequently in this masjid people are engaged in talking to each other in playing with their phones”
“that is why we always say that let us complete our first rows first you know so we don't have to allow other people to jump over the shoulders”
“so all your efforts coming from your work or your home to perform the friday prayer do not let it go as a waste”
For the dinner table
Friday is a gift from Allah, the best day of the week, almost like a weekly Eid. The khateeb reminded us that when the adhan is called, we should stop buying, selling, and working, and head to the masjid with our best clothes and a clear heart. He warned us against talking, texting, or playing on our phones during the khutbah, because the khutbah is actually part of the prayer, not just a warm-up. He also taught us to prepare for Jumu'ah from Thursday night and to fill our Friday with du'a and sending blessings on the Prophet. Most of all, he called us to ihsan, to do even our ordinary acts with excellence, as if Allah is watching us. Let's ask ourselves how we can make this Friday, and every Friday, truly count.
- What is one thing we can stop doing so we can listen better during the khutbah?
- How can we help each other get ready for Jumu'ah starting Thursday night?
- What does doing something with ihsan, or excellence, look like in our family?
