Honor your parents while they are alive
“The lucky person is the person that is able to take care of their parents in their own house.”
Birr al-walidayn, treating parents with the highest form of ihsan, is inseparable from gratitude and obedience to Allah, and requires avoiding even the smallest disrespect while actively serving, honoring, and humbling oneself before one's parents in life and after their death.
The khutbah in 9 steps
- Defining birr al-walidayn as the highest level of ihsan, above how we treat bosses, teachers, or friends
- Timeliness: summer means kids and parents spend more time together, so this topic is urgent
- Ibn Abbas: three things only accepted with three others, obeying Allah with the Prophet, salah with zakat, gratitude to Allah with gratitude to parents
- The hadith that Allah's pleasure lies in the parents' pleasure and His anger in theirs
- Quranic command to keep aging parents in your care, not pass them around or send them away
- Explaining 'uff' and uquq: even the smallest gesture of disdain toward parents is forbidden
- Lowering the wings of humility: staying a son or daughter no matter your status, wealth, or knowledge
- Stories of exemplary devotion: Ali Zayn al-Abideen, the general kissing his father's hand, the son preserving his Alzheimer's-stricken father's dignity
- Birr after parents' death: du'a, istighfar, fulfilling their debts and promises, honoring their friends
In the khateeb's words
“Just the mere fact of your existence Is enough to thank your parents for”
“The lucky person is the person that is able to take care of their parents in their own house”
“If you have your parents alive you have Jannah If you have your mom alive you have Jannah under her feet”
For the dinner table
This khutbah was about birr al-walidayn, treating our parents with the very highest level of excellence, even better than we treat a boss or teacher we want to impress. The khateeb explained that gratitude to Allah is not accepted without gratitude to our parents, and that Allah's pleasure is found in our parents' pleasure. He taught that the Quran forbids even the tiniest sign of annoyance, just saying 'uff', and instead commands kind words and lowering our wings of humility, no matter how successful we become. He urged everyone whose parents are alive to care for them personally, visit them, call them, and ask for their du'a, because living parents are a doorway to Paradise. For those whose parents have passed away, he reminded us we can still be righteous to them through du'a, istighfar, paying their debts, and honoring their friends.
- What is one thing your parents did for you when you were little that you never thanked them for?
- What would 'lowering your wings' look like for you this week at home?
