Spiritual survival matters more than physical survival
In an age of accelerating fitna, collapsing time, and looming destruction, Surah al-Shura 42:36-39 provides a divine survival plan, ten principles of spiritual survival that matter more than physical prepping.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Announcements and dua for the deceased (incl. John Esposito) before the khutbah proper
- Opening hadith (Bukhari/Muslim): time draws close, knowledge decreases, fitna spreads, greed dominates, killing becomes widespread
- Signs applied to today: loss of barakah in time, AI/'just google it' replacing beneficial knowledge, corruption even in football, the Doomsday Clock at 85 seconds to midnight
- Physical survivalism vs spiritual survival, the latter is more important
- Recitation and translation of Surah al-Shura 42:36-39 as the source of ten principles
- The ten principles expounded one by one: recognizing the world's illusion, iman, tawakkul, avoiding major sins, avoiding immorality, forgiving when angry, responding to Allah, establishing prayer, shura, spending from provision, defending against oppression
- Closing duas: unity of the Ummah, protection of the vulnerable, forgiveness regarding Palestine and Sudan
In the khateeb's words
“just google it this is artificial intelligence this is not ilmun nafir this is not beneficial knowledge”
“but there is also spiritual survival and that is more important than physical survival”
“the world that we are living in today what is with Allah is better than this world and it will last forever”
“if you see people acting like wolves don't become a sheep but if you see people acting like sheep don't become a wolf”
For the dinner table
Today the Sheikh reminded us that we are living in intense times: time feels shorter, real knowledge is harder to find, and trials are touching nearly everything. He said our biggest job is not just physical survival, stocking supplies or learning outdoor skills, but spiritual survival, holding onto faith and passing it to our children. Allah gives us ten keys in Surah Ash-Shura, including trusting Him, avoiding major sins and shameful things, forgiving when we are angry, praying, consulting one another, giving in charity, and standing up against oppression. The Sheikh especially asked us to forgive one another across ethnic and national lines so the Ummah can stand in one row. Let's talk tonight about one way each of us can protect our heart and help our family stay close to Allah.
- What is one small thing you can do every day to keep your faith strong when the world feels crazy?
- Can you remember a time you forgave someone even when you were angry? How did it feel?
- If you had to teach a friend one thing about Islam, what would it be?
