Wudu opens the heart to revelation
“Once the revelation becomes the source of our mind, our thinking, our behaving, our seeing, our understanding, Shaitan has no power over us.”
Wudu after waking is far more than physical cleansing, it symbolizes reopening the heart to Allah's revelation each day, and the true measure of faith is being transformed by that revelation (like fertile earth receiving rain) rather than merely performing religion outwardly.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Series intro: fifth installment of 'Paying Attention to Our Life', anchored in Surah al-Anfal 8:11 (rain, purification, firm feet)
- Morning discipline: remember Allah first, then get straight out of bed for wudu without negotiating with Shaitan
- The three-knots hadith: Shaitan works by obstructing our reception of revelation, not by physically restraining us
- Wudu purifies what each limb represents; the feet connect to the dua for firm footing and avoiding khutuwa shaitan (the incremental steps/recipe of Satan)
- Rain in 8:11 symbolizes revelation aimed at the heart, explained via the Bukhari/Muslim hadith of the three types of land
- Personal testimony: his own transformation through Islam leading his mother to take shahada after watching him for ten years
- Warning against being the 'hard ground': preserving and transmitting religion without inner transformation, performative, not transformative
- Closing dua for receptive hearts, followed by salah and community announcements
In the khateeb's words
“Whatever you say that don't include or doesn't lead to getting up out of the bed, walking to where you make wudu, if it doesn't include that, you are in a conversation with Shaitan.”
“Once the revelation becomes the source of our mind, our thinking, our behaving, our seeing, our understanding, Shaitan has no power over us.”
“He sends down water from the sky as rain by which to purify you and to remove from you the evil suggestions of Shaitan.”
“The idea is, the believer is such that their life reflects a life that says, this is what the religion will do for you and to you and through you, if you are sincere to it.”
For the dinner table
This week's khutbah reminded us that the very first moments of the day set the tone for everything else. The speaker encouraged us to remember Allah as soon as we wake up and to get up for wudu without arguing with the little voice that says we can wait, because that delay is a trick of Shaitan. He explained that wudu is like rain sent to purify us and prepare our hearts to receive Allah's revelation, and that our hearts are the earth where that rain either sinks in and bears fruit or runs off unused. The danger is being someone who looks religious on the outside but is not really changed on the inside; the goal is to be so transformed that people remember goodness when they see us. May Allah make our hearts soft and our actions sincere.
- What is one thing you can say to yourself the moment you open your eyes to remember Allah?
- When people see how you treat your brother, sister, or friend, what do you want them to think about?
- What is one small morning habit, like getting up for wudu right away, that can help you start the day strong?
