A healthy community starts at the masjid
“The masjid is supposed to be the heartbeat of a Muslim ummah.”
A healthy Muslim community begins with hearts attached to the masjid, expressed through regular salah, communal participation, generosity, and welcoming service.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The masjid is Allah’s house and the center of communal worship and belonging.
- The Prophet prioritized building mosques, making them the heartbeat of the Muslim ummah.
- Attachment to the masjid means organizing life around salah and seeking mosque community wherever one travels.
- Bilal, Abu Hurairah, and Uthman illustrate attachment through worship, learning, and generosity.
- Listeners are urged to examine their connection to salah and the masjid and reconnect if it is weak.
- The masjid should be compassionate and welcoming, while Muslims should benefit their communities like rain.
In the khateeb's words
“The masjid is supposed to be the heartbeat of a Muslim ummah.”
“It means that we plan our day around salah. It means that when we are attached to the masjid, salah never leaves our mind.”
“If your answers to these questions are in the negative, then reconnect. It's not too late. It's never too late.”
“a masjid must be a place of welcome, a place of mercy, a place of compassion, a place of kindness, a place where people can be comfortable”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that the masjid is a place to worship Allah, learn, build friendships, and care for one another. Loving the masjid includes making time for salah and supporting the community through attendance, volunteering, and generosity. He encouraged us to help children feel welcome and happy there, and to make room for people of every age. Through the story of the Prophet gently correcting a visitor, he showed how kindness can help people learn. If we feel distant from prayer or the masjid, we can reconnect and ask Allah to help our hearts grow attached to His houses.
- What helps you feel welcome and happy at the masjid?
- What is one way our family could help people at the masjid this week?
- How could we respond kindly when someone makes a mistake?
