Closeness to Allah protects against Satan
“To become close to Allah is the means of protecting against Shaitan.”
Because human beings have free will, Satan can tempt but cannot control believing servants; protection comes through understanding his tactics, dismissing his whispers, remembering Allah, maintaining prayer, and preserving family bonds.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Establishes that divine foreknowledge is compatible with human free will and a fair system.
- Uses Quranic teaching to describe Satan’s influence and limited authority over believers.
- Presents closeness to Allah through daily devotion and attentive prayer as protection.
- Summarizes Imam Ghazali’s three defenses: learn Satan’s methods, disregard his whispers, and remember Allah.
- Lists Satan’s tactics, including doubt, religious innovation, falsehood, beautifying sin, distraction, and family division.
- Adds abandonment of prayer and obsession with worldly life as further satanic traps.
In the khateeb's words
“whatever it needs to be done to become close to Allah is the means of protecting against Shaitan.”
“Number three, to consistently remember Allah with your tongue and heart.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that Allah knows everything, yet He has given us free will, so His system is fair and our choices matter. Shaitan whispers, creates doubts, makes sins look attractive, distracts us from remembering Allah, and tries to divide families. Our protection comes through growing stronger in deen, being attentive in salah, remembering Allah with the tongue and heart, and learning how Shaitan works. The message is hopeful: Shaitan does not have authority over Allah’s believing servants, and we can turn back to Allah when we recognize a whisper or temptation. As a family, we can help one another stay close to Allah and refuse to let arguments separate us.
- What helps you remember Allah when you feel distracted or worried?
- How can we tell when something wrong is being made to look appealing?
- What is one kind thing we can do when someone in our family is upset?
