The best deed depends on your needs

“The most important thing is to ensure that you're establishing tawheed in your life, monotheism.”

The khateeb, at 16:13

In one sentence

The best deed is not identical for everyone: after tawheed and obligatory worship, believers should identify what they most need to improve and pursue excellence through worship, character, service, and striving.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Surveys prophetic answers identifying prayer, parental care, fasting, dhikr, good character, service, and Quran learning as among the best deeds.
  2. Explains that the best deed varies according to each person's circumstances, while tawheed and obligatory worship remain foundational.
  3. Contrasts the Sahaba's pursuit of excellence with the modern tendency to settle for the bare minimum.
  4. Illustrates striving through the competition of Abu Bakr and Umar, wealthy and poor Companions, and early Muslim scholars.
  5. Urges believers to strive urgently for the Hereafter before closing with supplication and a farewell as departing imam.

The khutbah teaches that the best deed can look different for different people. Our foundation should always be tawheed, belief in Allah's oneness, and the obligatory acts of Islam. After that, we should look honestly at our weaknesses and needs and strive to improve through prayer, fasting, dhikr, good manners, helping others, and learning the Quran. The Companions worked hard for the highest ranks of Paradise, and we should aim higher than merely doing the minimum.

  2. How could you make someone in our family or community happy?
  3. What ordinary action could become charity through your intention?
