Use winter nights to strengthen worship

“If you don't have a habit of fasting, then this is a perfect opportunity to begin that habit.”

The khateeb, at 9:28

In one sentence

Believers should use the changing seasons, especially longer winter nights and shorter days, to recognize Allah’s signs and strengthen worship through fasting, congregational prayer, wudu, tahajjud, and more attentive salah.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. The Prophet’s example of drawing spiritual lessons from falling leaves introduces reflection on nature.
  2. Seasonal changes reveal Allah’s creative power and should lead believers to gratitude.
  3. Shorter winter days provide an opportunity to begin or increase voluntary fasting.
  4. Earlier Isha and later Fajr make congregational prayer more accessible and rewarding.
  5. Cold weather offers opportunities for careful wudu, while longer nights support tahajjud and intimate supplication.
  6. Salah should be practiced with such presence that observers can recognize sincere devotion.
Try this week
Reflect on seasonal changes and connect them to Allah’s creation and power.
Begin voluntary fasting during shorter winter days, starting with once weekly and building toward Mondays, Thursdays, or three days monthly.
Attend Isha and Fajr in congregation, gradually working toward praying every salah in the masjid.
Perfect wudu even in cold or difficult conditions.
Use longer nights for tahajjud, waking around 4:45 or 5:00 to pray and make dua.
Practice salah with greater focus and presence so its sincerity is evident.
