Islam is Allah's greatest blessing, so Muslims should show gratitude by living according to the Qur'an and Sunnah, guarding their speech and relationships, rejecting religious innovations and conflicting religious observances, and remaining courteous in ordinary dealings.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Calls listeners to taqwa, righteous speech, respect for others' rights, and adherence to the Qur'an and Sunnah.
- Defines bid'ah as invented religious practices and warns that abandoning prophetic guidance leads to misguidance.
- Retells the Children of Israel's rescue from Pharaoh and their rejection of blessings through idol worship.
- Applies that warning to Muslim participation in or congratulations for Christmas and Thanksgiving celebrations.
- Distinguishes religious boundaries from general kindness, permitting congratulations for weddings, jobs, certificates, and other ordinary milestones.
- Closes with prayers for guidance, Gaza, Al-Aqsa, and oppressed Muslims before the prayer begins.
In the khateeb's words
“Without the guidance of Prophet Muhammad Alayhi salatu wasalam We will never be able to understand or apply the word of Allah”
“It doesn't mean You should be mean To anybody It doesn't mean That you should Insult anybody But you should just Plain Out Right Tell them We do not believe In these festivities”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Allah’s greatest blessing is the guidance of Islam, which leads us toward Jannah. He used the story of Musa and his followers’ rescue from Pharaoh to warn against forgetting blessings and turning away from guidance. He encouraged us to show gratitude through obedience to Allah, careful speech, and respect for our family members’ rights. He also emphasized following the Prophet’s guidance when practicing our faith. In discussing other religions’ celebrations, he urged Muslims not to offer religious holiday greetings, while also saying we should avoid insults and can congratulate others on personal milestones such as weddings or a new job.
- What blessing could you thank Allah for today, and how could you show that thanks?
- When you are upset, what could help you choose words you will feel good about later?
- How could you show kindness to someone whose religious beliefs differ from yours?
