Worship requires attention, cleanliness, and daily dua
“There is a time in which the du'a is accepted and we shouldn't let the Friday go by without taking advantage of that.”
A faithful Muslim should overcome heedlessness through repeated du'as, attentive Jumuah practice, cleanliness, honest scholarship, and commitment to Islamic teachings.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Encourages memorizing repetitive daily du'as and teaching religious practice through family routines.
- Explains the special Friday hour for accepted du'a and the weekly expiation associated with Jumuah.
- Expounds the hadith about Friday washing, early arrival, walking, sitting near the imam, and attentive listening.
- Clarifies exceptions and meanings in the hadith while emphasizing personal, family, home, and masjid cleanliness.
- Introduces the marketplace dhikr, including its immense promised rewards and disagreement over its authenticity.
- Discusses Quran 4:157, the Islamic belief about Jesus, and defending the honor of Maryam and Aisha.
In the khateeb's words
“The point is to know that there is a time in which the du'a is accepted and we shouldn't let the Friday go by without taking advantage of that.”
“We have to keep ourselves clean and we have to keep the masjid clean. We have to keep our homes clean.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb encouraged us to remember Allah during everyday activities and to learn du'a through regular practice. He reminded us to prepare for Jumu'ah, listen carefully, and take its opportunities for reward seriously. He also reassured people who cannot walk to the masjid that their limitations do not put the reward he described out of reach. Cleanliness, caring for our families, and advising one another kindly were practical parts of his message. When teaching the marketplace remembrance, he openly acknowledged disagreement among scholars about the hadith's authenticity, giving us an opportunity to discuss honesty and respect when learning our religion.
- Which daily activity would you like to connect with a du'a, and what would help you remember it?
- What is one thing you heard at Jumu'ah that you would like our family to practice this week?
- How could you give someone a helpful reminder without embarrassing them?
