Oppose war without sectarian hatred
“Let us agree to disagree in a civil manner.”
The khutbah argues that Muslims should respond to the Israel-Iran war by rejecting sectarian hatred and false moral equivalence, standing against injustice and further war through ethical civic action, and strengthening worship and local responsibility with hope.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Acknowledges limits of expertise and returns to Qur'an and Sunnah for guidance during crises.
- Distinguishes theological disagreement with Twelver Shiism from declaring ordinary Shias outside Islam.
- Argues that Israel and Iran are not morally equivalent in the current conflict, while urging Muslims to suspend sectarian disputes.
- Highlights perceived double standards in reactions to Gaza, Iran, war, displacement, and Western foreign policy.
- Calls American Muslims to oppose another Middle Eastern war and participate ethically in civic life.
- Redirects listeners toward worship, optimism, family, community service, and responsibility within their own sphere of influence.
In the khateeb's words
“Let us agree to disagree in a civil manner. What is the benefit of me preaching hatred to my masjid and they preaching hatred to their masjid?”
“No matter how angry you are, the two are not and cannot be the same.”
“your salvation is dependent upon your efforts and not the results”
For the dinner table
The khutbah speaks to the fear and anger created by the Israel-Iran war and the wider threat of another world war. Shaykh Yasir Qadhi says Muslims can disagree deeply with Twelver Shiism and with the Iranian regime without treating all Shias or Iranians as enemies, and he rejects equating the two sides in the current conflict. He calls listeners to resist sectarian hatred, oppose injustice and war, and use their voices responsibly as citizens. He also reminds us that our first responsibility is personal worship and care for the people closest to us. We should think about the world, act faithfully in our homes and communities, stay hopeful, and leave the results to Allah.
- How can we disagree with people without becoming hateful toward them?
- What is one good action we can take in our own family or community this week?
- How can we stay hopeful when we cannot control the final outcome?
