Surah Yasin turns faith into action
“Our job is to present ourselves with good character and good mannerisms, and the rest is with Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.”
The story of the messengers and the believing man in Surah Yasin teaches believers to respond to truth with sincere faith, patient good character, active support, remembrance of Allah, and readiness for accountability and the Hereafter.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Explains that Qur’anic stories strengthen faith, provide reminders, and are meant to produce personal change.
- Describes a town’s rejection and mockery of three messengers and the messengers’ calm commitment to clear delivery.
- Draws lessons about Allah’s patience, good character under hostility, self-examination, and remembrance during hardship.
- Examines the unnamed man who ran to support the messengers, highlighting courage, gentleness, tawhid, and concern for his people.
- Contrasts the man’s entry into Paradise with the town’s destruction after repeated rejection and emphasizes final accountability.
- Applies the story through sincere intentions, better manners at home, forgiveness, self-improvement, gratitude, and constant remembrance of Allah.
In the khateeb's words
“Specifically, an ibrah is a lesson that causes a realization, that causes a change, a transfer.”
“Our job is to present ourselves with good character and good mannerisms, and the rest is with Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.”
“This is him presenting with gentleness because he is counting these people as his own. Even when they are threatening these messengers, he is caring for them.”
“And at home, the people closest to us, they're the ones who see our true character. Our true akhlaaf.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah used the story in Surah Yasin of three messengers and a man who hurried to support them. We were reminded that Qur’anic stories are meant to change us, not merely inform us. The man showed courage, gentleness, sincere worship, and concern for his people even when they rejected the truth. The khutbah urged us to examine our intentions, improve our character, especially at home, and remember Allah often. It also reminded us that this life leads to accountability, while faithfulness can lead to Allah’s forgiveness and Paradise.
- Where could we show better character at home this week?
- What blessing do we often notice only after losing it?
