Returning to Quran and Sunnah restores honor

IDC Houston · Ahmad Khater

“We do our part, Allah's promise will come without delay.”

The khateeb, at 13:40

In one sentence

The ummah's defeat, humiliation, and division stem from breaking the covenant with Allah and His Messenger by abandoning the Quran and Sunnah; only returning to them will restore victory, unity, and honor.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Breaking the covenant with Allah causes enemies to overtake the ummah and seize its resources
  2. Modern shame about Islam: hiding prayers at work, children wanting to drop Muslim names
  3. Fatwa-shopping and loophole-seeking instead of obeying like the sahaba
  4. The sahaba won by iman and covenant-keeping, not by technology, wealth, or numbers
  5. Muslim rulers not ruling by Allah's book brings infighting and division between Muslim countries
  6. Hadith on 'ina transactions and attachment to dunya: money in the heart, not the hand, leads to haram
  7. Humiliation is ordained on whoever abandons the Prophet's way; aiza comes from Allah alone
  8. Duas for the ummah in Ghazza, Sudan, and worldwide, asking for return to the religion
Try this week
Pray at work and on time instead of skipping or combining all five prayers out of embarrassment
Stop shopping multiple sheikhs for loopholes; accept rulings even when inconvenient
Give up transactions that contain haram even when profitable, and seek the halal instead
Keep money in your hand, not your heart: be willing to walk away from haram deals for Allah's sake
Hold to the Quran and Sunnah rather than asking 'is it sunnah or wajib?' to minimize practice
Be a proud, practicing Muslim rather than hiding your identity for career success
Sources the khateeb cited
Musnad AhmadWarns that riba-dodging and chasing agriculture/business bring humiliation until return to the religion

For the dinner table

The khutbah taught that the Muslim ummah's troubles, losing lands, being divided, being humiliated, come from breaking our covenant with Allah by abandoning the Quran and Sunnah. The khateeb gave real examples, like Muslims too embarrassed to pray at work, or a boy who wanted to change his Muslim name to fit in. He warned against asking scholar after scholar until we find the easiest answer, instead of saying 'we hear and we obey' like the companions did. He reminded us that money itself is not bad, the danger is when money lives in our heart and we choose haram profits over Allah. True honor and success, he said, come from Allah alone, not from hiding our faith to get ahead. The message: if we return to the Quran and Sunnah sincerely, Allah's promise of victory and dignity will surely come.

  1. Have you ever felt shy about being Muslim at school or work, what could you do differently next time?
  2. What do you think it means to keep money 'in your hand' but not 'in your heart'?
  3. The companions said 'we hear and we obey', why do you think people today look for excuses instead?
