Prepare now for the grave and judgment
“Act on the truth when you know it's the truth.”
Earthly life is brief and the only stage where we can choose our deeds, so believers should fear Allah privately, repent quickly, and act faithfully to prepare for the grave, judgment, and eternity.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces four stages of existence: earthly life, the grave, judgment, and eternal destiny.
- Explains how angels record deeds and how private conduct reveals genuine faith.
- Emphasizes repentance and the immense reward of small, unseen good deeds.
- Describes the believer’s and sinner’s experiences in the grave and on Judgment Day.
- Interprets the Prophet’s dream as warnings against neglecting Quran and prayer, lying, adultery, and usury.
- Closes with practical exhortations to uphold truth, avoid backbiting, marry when ready, and fast when not ready.
In the khateeb's words
“But the most important, the most consequential, the only one that we have any control on what to do in, this one on earth.”
“Hold fast to the rope of the law. Act on the truth when you know it's the truth. Don't lie. Don't backbite if you can avoid it.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb described four stages of life and reminded us that our time on earth is the shortest, yet it is the time when our choices can shape what follows. He taught that Allah knows what we do in public and in private, so sincere deeds done when nobody else is watching are especially meaningful. He also encouraged us not to despair after mistakes, but to seek Allah’s forgiveness and correct ourselves quickly. His warnings about neglected prayer, lies, unlawful relationships, and usury showed that knowing what is right must lead to action. The khutbah ended with hope and a prayer that Allah make goodness easy for us, protect us from evil, and admit us into paradise.
- What is one good deed you could do this week without anyone noticing?
- What helps you make a good choice when nobody else is watching?
- When you make a mistake, what can help you apologize and ask Allah for forgiveness?
