Remembering Allah strengthens faith in hardship
“Keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah.”
Consistent remembrance of Allah through dhikr, attentive prayer, reliance, and extra worship in Sha'ban strengthens faith and equips believers to face hardship.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The opening covers community prayers, deaths, illnesses, Ramadan dates, events, and brief announcements.
- The story of Fatima and Ali presents bedtime dhikr as better than receiving a servant.
- The dua taught to Mu'adh emphasizes asking Allah for help to remember, thank, and worship Him.
- Dhikr supports reliance on Allah, focused prayer, avoidance of vain talk, and courage in difficult tasks.
- The stories of Hud and Uhud show how remembrance and trust strengthen believers under pressure.
- The khutbah closes by encouraging increased dhikr and fasting in Sha'ban while preparing for Ramadan and community activities.
In the khateeb's words
“And Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to him, keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah.”
“But when you make dua to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, when you are asking Him for help, you are relying on Allah azawajal.”
“So the more we are attentive to avoiding the bad things, this is going to help us have that khushu, that presence, that God consciousness in our salah.”
“This is a great month that we have just entered Shaban. This is a month that we should increase in our zikr and remembrance of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that remembering Allah is a source of strength, not merely a phrase to repeat. Through the story of Fatima and Ali and the advice given to Mu'adh, the khateeb encouraged regular dhikr, especially before sleep and after prayer. He connected remembrance with focused salah, avoiding harmful talk, and trusting Allah during frightening or difficult moments. Because Sha'ban has begun, he urged the community to increase dhikr and voluntary fasting in preparation for Ramadan. At home, we can make remembrance part of bedtime, prayer, and the way we respond to hardship.
- Which short dhikr could you remember before bed tonight, and what might it help you with?
- What usually distracts you during prayer, and what is one small change you could try?
- When something feels scary or difficult, what does trusting Allah look like in your actions?
