A strong Muslim community needs service and restraint
“If you have the skill, offer it to the masjid. That is how the community grows.”
A healthy Muslim community requires gratitude to Allah, active service, solidarity with the suffering, and disciplined, welcoming speech.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Begins with praise of Allah, gratitude for every blessing, and blessings upon Prophet Muhammad.
- Explains that the Prophet modeled guidance for every aspect of life and active community citizenship.
- Challenges listeners to volunteer their skills and participate in Masjid As-Salaam rather than merely complain.
- Connects fading concern for Gaza with the need to preserve prayer, empathy, and spiritual responsiveness.
- Warns that gossip, backbiting, harshness, and careless speech can drive people away from the masjid.
- Closes by urging welcoming conduct, restraint of the tongue, and practical participation in the community.
In the khateeb's words
“Are we here to make a difference or are we here to just be another complainer?”
“If you have the skill, offer it to the masjid. That is how the community grows.”
“How you say something is more important than what you say.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that every blessing we have comes from Allah, so we should live with gratitude and humility. Prophet Muhammad showed that Muslims should guide one another and actively serve their communities. We are encouraged to offer our skills and time at the masjid instead of only criticizing it. The speaker also reminds us not to let suffering, including the suffering in Gaza, fade from our prayers and hearts. Finally, our words should be careful and welcoming, because harsh speech, gossip, or backbiting can push people away from Islam and the community.
- What is one helpful job you could do for our masjid or neighborhood this week?
- How can we make our words feel welcoming to someone new?
- Who can we remember in our du'as when people are suffering?
