Contentment grows through gratitude and patience
“Do not look at those who are higher than you.”
True contentment comes from gratitude for Allah’s blessings, patience through tests, and freedom from comparison and excessive attachment to worldly possessions.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines contentment as a source of peace, happiness, and harmony that wealth cannot buy.
- Warns that competition, materialism, and overindulgence distract people from the temporary nature of worldly life.
- Uses Quranic reminders about wealth, children, possessions, and worldly attractions as temporary and deceptive.
- Explains that gratitude when Allah gives and patience when He takes produce contentment.
- Presents looking at those less fortunate as protection from jealousy and dissatisfaction.
- Encourages serving Allah rather than becoming enslaved to fashion, wealth, work, desires, or the dunya.
In the khateeb's words
“And do not look at those who are higher than you. So that way you will not disgrace the blessings of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“if you want to be strong in your faith, you're going to have to go through tests.”
“One way you're a slave, but you'd rather choose to be a slave of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and not of this dunya.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that contentment brings peace, while wealth and possessions alone cannot provide lasting happiness. Worldly blessings are temporary, so we should enjoy them without letting them distract us from prayer, Quran, and the afterlife. We can protect ourselves from jealousy by noticing what we have and remembering those who have less. When Allah gives us something, we should be grateful, and when He takes something away, we should be patient. The goal is to serve Allah rather than become controlled by money, status, fashion, work, or desire.
- What is one blessing you sometimes overlook?
- When can comparing yourself with others make you less thankful?
- What is one way to spend less time serving the dunya this week?
