Trust Allah while taking the right means
“Based on the means that are available to you and the information available to you, act accordingly.”
Faith requires recognizing both the observable and unseen dimensions of Allah’s creation, taking responsible worldly means, and obeying divine commands within one’s capacity.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Explains how observable weather and illness coexist with an unseen angelic and divine system.
- Argues that Allah’s commands must be followed even when their wisdom or benefits are not fully understood.
- Defines tawakkul as reliance on Allah combined with effort, precautions, worship, and accountability within one’s control.
- Uses wealth accountability, the Battle of Badr, and early Madinah to illustrate planning and responsibility.
- Applies the principle to mosque connection, civic rights, worship, future planning, and prayer for Muslims.
In the khateeb's words
“The problem that we think is that these two negate each other, but they don't. They're working parallel.”
“So based on the means that are available to you and the information available to you, act accordingly.”
“We do it because it's a command of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“You are accountable for that which is within your control. If something is not in a person's control, is beyond one's control, you're not accountable for that.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah taught that the world we can observe and the unseen world Allah has told us about work together. Faith does not mean ignoring evidence, precautions, work, or planning; we should use the means available to us while trusting Allah with what is beyond our control. We pray, fast, and obey Allah because He commanded these acts, not only because we can see a benefit. We should stay connected to the masjid, care for our community, use permissible rights responsibly, and make dua while doing our part.
- What is one thing you can do this week instead of simply waiting for Allah to solve it?
- How can our family balance making dua with making a practical plan?
- What responsibility is within your control today?
