Submit to Allah and serve the common good
“We too are sometimes guilty of being selfish with that which Allah has given to benefit all people.”
A faithful Muslim submits wholly to Allah, purifies character, pursues justice and shared good, respects other faith communities, and shares divine guidance generously.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines the faithful Muslim as one who believes in Allah, obeys revelation, and seeks a pure heart.
- Explains that submission to Allah frees believers from servitude to people and supports justice.
- Presents Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad as prophets from one divine source.
- Argues for religious freedom, protection of houses of worship, and respectful speech about other faiths.
- Recasts moral life as a race toward good where communities celebrate one another's benefit to humanity.
- Warns against hoarding or distorting knowledge, then closes by urging charity and promising continuation.
In the khateeb's words
“one who is faithful always suffers regret when he has broken a law and made a serious mistake he is to ask forgiveness from his lord and his master”
“when we believe in Allah and obey Him we become so conscious of our action that no one can enslave us”
“we are running together for a victory which will dignify us all”
“we too are sometimes guilty of being selfish with that which Allah has given to benefit all people”
For the dinner table
Today we heard that a faithful Muslim believes in Allah and lets that belief shape every choice, especially when no one else is watching. Serving Allah makes us less controlled by people and gives us courage to pursue justice with humility, repentance, and good character. The sermon also taught us to honor the prophets, respect and protect other houses of worship, and work with Christians and Jews for what benefits humanity. Finally, we should not hoard what Allah has taught us; we should share knowledge honestly and generously while continuing to compete in good.
- What is one desire you could bring closer to Allah's guidance this week?
- How could our family celebrate someone else's good work instead of feeling jealous?
- What knowledge or kindness can we share generously with someone else?
