Salah carries you through grief

“The greatest moments in our deen didn't always come at a time of strength or ease.”

The khateeb, at 5:17

In one sentence

Isra and Mi'raj teaches that Allah carries believers through grief by redirecting them toward steadfastness, responsibility, certainty, and especially salah.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Isra and Mi'raj came during the Prophet's year of grief, when Allah answered suffering with closeness rather than revenge or worldly power.
  2. The losses of Abu Talib and Khadijah and the rejection at Ta'if illustrate prophetic endurance and reliance on Allah.
  3. The journey teaches that direction matters more than distance, and worship should morally transform and restrain believers from wrongdoing.
  4. Masjid al-Aqsa represents inherited guidance, responsibility, steadfastness, sacrifice, and concern for the ummah.
  5. Abu Bakr's response demonstrates certainty rooted in trust in the Prophet's character, not the ability to explain every detail.
  6. The journey returned to earth through salah, which carries believers through grief, pressure, doubt, and injustice.
Try this week
Turn to Allah when hardship breaks you, rather than treating pain as evidence of abandonment.
Stand in salah when direction feels unclear and hold onto it when certainty is shaken.
Allow worship to restrain you from wrongdoing and make you better toward others.
Move toward Allah with responsibility and do not abandon responsibility toward the ummah.

For the dinner table

The khateeb described Al Isra’ wal Mi’raj as a gift of closeness to Allah during a deeply painful time in the Prophet’s life. He reminded us that we can bring our weakness and sadness to Allah honestly. He explained that worship should help us become kinder, avoid wrongdoing, and take responsibility for others. He also encouraged us to know the Prophet’s character so that our faith has a strong foundation. Above all, he presented the five daily prayers as moments to turn to Allah and find strength to face the difficulties still in front of us.

  1. When you feel sad or overwhelmed, what would you like to tell Allah in your own words?
  2. What is one way our next prayer could help us treat someone more kindly?
  3. Who could our family support this week, and what could we do together?
