Blessings are grace, not entitlement
“When we receive or keep receiving Allah's bounties, we keep being ungrateful.”
True spiritual knowledge begins with recognizing that every blessing and every level of forgiveness comes from Allah’s grace, not from our own deserving, and this humility transforms prayer, hardship, and conduct.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- The sermon explains four levels of divine response to sin: forgiveness, pardon, overlooking, and grace.
- It defines Allah’s fadl as unearned mercy that can transform mistakes into goodness.
- It warns that constant blessings breed ingratitude and the illusion that good deeds entitle us to them.
- It uses Quranic guidance and Dua Akumal to reject self-praise and cultivate ma'rifah of oneself and Allah.
- It concludes that ma'rifah makes suffering bearable, prayer less transactional, and commitment to truth and justice firmer.
In the khateeb's words
“Anything that I have. Anything that I possess. Is from the grace of Allah.”
“The problem with us is that when we receive or keep receiving Allah's bounties, we keep being ungrateful. There is no shukr from us.”
“Don't be proud of anything you have. You have nothing.”
“Once we have the ma'rifah of Allah, everything becomes easy for us. Even any musibah in this world. Suffering will not remain suffering.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah invited us to reflect on Allah’s forgiveness, pardon, overlooking of mistakes, and grace. The khateeb described grace as giving us more than we deserve, even transforming mistakes into goodness. He reminded us that life, health, family, and community are gifts we can easily take for granted. Our good deeds should not make us proud or lead us to think Allah owes us blessings. When we pray, we can bring our needs while also seeking to know Allah better and approaching Him with gratitude and humility.
- What is one everyday gift you would like to thank Allah for tonight?
- How could we help someone learn from a mistake with kindness?
- Besides asking for something, what would you like to say to Allah in your next dua?
