Forgiveness strengthens faith and restores brotherhood

“It is not allowed for a Muslim, it is not permissible for a Muslim to shun his brother for more than three days.”

The khateeb, at 12:29

In one sentence

Forgiveness ('afw) and active reconciliation between people are defining traits of the believer that earn Allah's honor and reward, while shunning, grudges, and tale-bearing destroy the brotherhood of faith.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening praise and reminder of taqwa; humans err, so mutual understanding and pardon are necessary
  2. Those who pardon are muhsinoon who first benefit themselves: reward, dignity, peace of mind, Allah's forgiveness
  3. Quranic verses on pardoning (Aal Imran's 'al-'aafeena 'an an-naas', 'repel evil with what is better') with Ibn Kathir's tafsir
  4. Hadith of Anas: do not hate, envy, or shun one another; a Muslim may not boycott his brother more than three days
  5. Shaitan portrays forgiveness as humiliation, but it is in fact strength and self-mastery
  6. Examples: the Prophet's character per Aisha; Abu Bakr forgiving Mistah after the slander of Aisha; Ibn Taymiyyah forgiving his enemies and consoling his worst enemy's family
  7. Second part: extinguish causes of discord, reconcile disputing parties, stop tale-bearing (qatat) and harmful gossip
  8. Hadith of Abu Darda: reconciliation outranks prayer, fasting, and charity; corrupting relations is 'al-haliqah' that shaves the religion

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminds us that people make mistakes, so believers should respond with forgiveness, patience, and sincere efforts to repair relationships. Forgiving others is not weakness; it brings honor, peace, Allah’s forgiveness, and stronger brotherhood. The Prophet and the righteous people after him modeled this by answering wrongdoing with kindness and pardon. We are encouraged to stop gossip, avoid carrying messages that create conflict, and actively reconcile people. Making peace is a serious act of worship that protects the faith and brings a great reward from Allah.
