Prayer should build Muslim unity
“The trouble with us is that we do it, but we don't use it as a mechanism of knowing each other.”
The khutbah argues that Surah al-Jumu'ah makes Friday prayer a weekly engine of Muslim unity and remembrance, while teaching that true religious knowledge must produce moral character and action rather than mere ritual or memorization.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Friday prayer symbolizes Muslim unity and should help worshippers know one another.
- Surah al-Jumu'ah commands leaving commerce for prayer, then returning to work while remembering Allah.
- The caravan incident shows that business and entertainment are not inherently wrong, but become wrong when they displace religious priorities.
- The Prophet's educational mission combines recitation, purification, and teaching, so moral formation should precede Quranic memorization.
- Muslim decline comes from knowledge without commitment or morality, followed by a dua for guidance, healing, forgiveness, and beneficial knowledge.
In the khateeb's words
“The trouble with us is that we do it, but we don't use it as a mechanism of knowing each other.”
“It's a very interesting, that tell you, there is a balance in this religion between the spirituality and the rituals and between the materialistic.”
“no, you should purify them first before they can learn the book”
“it's not lack of knowledge it's lack of commitment to that knowledge lack of morality to that knowledge”
For the dinner table
The khateeb taught that Surah al-Jumu'ah presents Friday prayer as more than a ritual: it gathers Muslims so they can remember Allah and know one another. We should pause business and distractions for the prayer and khutbah, then return to work honestly while continuing remembrance. He also said that teaching Islam begins with purifying the heart and building character, not only memorizing Quran. Knowledge matters when it produces commitment and moral action. He ended by asking Allah to guide families, heal the sick, forgive the deceased, and increase us in beneficial knowledge.
- What distraction would be hardest for you to put aside during Jumu'ah, and why?
- How can we show good character when we are busy with school, work, or money?
- What is one way our family can get to know more people at the masjid?
